| Missoula
has some of the premier watersport recreation in the nation.
The Missoula valley offers opportunity for kayaking,
white water rafting, canoeing, and for those faint of
heart, inner-tubing as well. |
The
Clark Fork
The Alberton Gorge
Just west of Missoula,
the Clark Fork River picks up speed and tumbles into the
Alberton Gorge, Montana's leading summer whitewater run.
If you want flat out fun, this is it! Hidden deep within
this spectacular canyon are rollicking Class II, III and
IV rapids such as Tumbleweed, Boateater, and Fang to name
just a few. Between rapids paddlers have a chance to swim,
relax, and soak up the sun, and watch for eagles, osprey,
kingfishers, as well as the occasional moose, deer, bear
or mountain lion.

The Blackfoot River
The Blackfoot River
pours into the Clark Fork River just east of Hellgate
Canyon. With its headwaters to the north in the Bob
Marshall and Scapegoat Wildernesses, the Blackfoot tumbles
out of the mountains, meanders through willow-choked
meadows, and picks up speed again as it rushes toward
Missoula. During early season highwater the Blackfoot
has long stretches of continuous Class II and III whitewater.
With its fast moving currents, clear pools, friendly
whitewater, and mountain scenery, the Blackfoot is truly
a classic Montana river.
