ADMISSION INFORMATION

Admission to the MBA professional program requires formal admission to the Graduate School at The University of Montana. Enrollment may be limited to a size consistent with a quality graduate education. As a general rule, you must be formally admitted to the Graduate School and must have completed the business foundation courses before you can take any of the professional program courses. Exceptions are possible; however, the MBA Program Director must approve them before you can attend class. If you are unsure which business foundation courses you need to complete, submit a copy of your undergraduate college transcript(s) to the program assistant for an evaluation.

Admission to the MBA professional program can occur in any semester, although several 600-level courses scheduled in Spring Semester have Fall Semester prerequisites and cannot be taken if the student starts in the spring (i.e., FIN 681, MBA 603, MGMT 665 and MGMT 685). Students entering the Off-Campus MBA Program are required to have a recent generation microcomputer running Windows 2000 or later equipped with a CD-ROM drive, high-speed modem and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 at a minimum. Also, students must have an e-mail address, as most correspondence with faculty and administrators is electronic. The recommended business applications software is Microsoft Office 2003 or later version (i.e. Office XP).

A total of nine semester credits of MBA program elective credits may be taken as a graduate non-degree student prior to admission to the MBA Program. Since admission into the professional program allows students to start taking the core required classes, graduate non-degree work would only include MBA program elective courses. Some electives may have MBA-level prerequisites, so not all elective courses would be available to take as a graduate non-degree student.  Additionally, MBA program core (professional) courses cannot be taken prior to completion of all of the required business foundation courses.

Prerequisite business foundation courses
Students may apply to and be admitted into the MBA Program prior to completing the business foundation courses.  Business courses taken at institutions other than The University of Montana will be accepted if they are determined to be equivalent.

Entry into the business foundation courses at UM requires either graduate non-degree or post-baccalaureate status.  Graduate non-degree status is necessary in order to be eligible to register for the 500-level online courses and also gives the student access to the undergraduate-level business foundation courses. Students deciding on graduate non-degree status must select the "graduate non-degree external program" during the application process.

Post-baccalaureate status students can only register for the undergraduate business foundation courses. Required for both 500-level and undergraduate-level foundation courses is at least one semester of college-level mathematics and computer literacy, which encompasses a working knowledge of word-processing, spreadsheet and database skills.

 ADMISSION CRITERIA

Admission will be judged on the basis of the applicant’s:

  1. Undergraduate GPA as well as the GPA for the last 60 university semester (or equivalent) credits completed.  We look for minimum GPAs of 3.00.

  2. GMAT scores; see GMAT Requirements for specifics.

  3. Letter of intent

  4. Three letters of recommendation

  5. Other attributes of the applicant’s background such as work experience.

EARLY ADMISSION

University of Montana undergraduates only may be admitted to the MBA Program under the Graduate School's early admission policy if the student meets all three (3) criteria listed below.  All undergraduate credits taken in this status will be charged at the graduate rate.

  1. has six (6) or fewer credits left to complete a bachelor's degree

  2. takes the GMAT prior to the end of the first term of study

  3. completes the bachelor's degree within one semester

PROVISIONAL ADMISSION

Provisional admission may be granted to students who do not meet all of the standards for full admission. This is decided on a case-by-case basis dependent on the particular standards that have not been met and an acceptable plan for the standards to be met.

International students may be admitted provisionally if their English language skills do not meet admission standards. They may not take classes in their major, but will take ESL (English as a Second Language) classes until they meet admission standards.

APPLICATION PROCESS

When you are ready to apply for formal admission:

  1. Complete the On-Line Application Form (available at the Graduate School), which includes instructions in paying the $51 application fee on-line.

  2. Collect the application materials listed below:

  • Current resume and summary of work experience.

  • One official transcript of all previous college coursework (including transcript of advanced degree, if any).

  • Letters of recommendations by a minimum of three persons qualified to judge your academic potential (forms available from the Graduate School).

  • Official scores for the GMAT examination. Scores more than five years old are accepted only if you have completed substantial graduate work at UM or have taken a graduate degree elsewhere. See GMAT Preparation Tips).

  • International Students: Applicants whose native language is not English, must submit official TOEFL scores (Test of English as a Foreign Language). If the TOEFL score is below 580 (paper-based test), 237 (computer-based test) or 92 (internet-based test), applicants may be admitted provisionally into a graduate program or as a graduate non-degree student and be required to complete an English as a Second Language course(s) before they can take courses in their major.

GMAT REQUIREMENTS

The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is a worldwide-standardized test used to measure aptitude for graduate work in business. It does not measure your knowledge of business subjects. There are, for example, no accounting questions on the GMAT. You should plan to take the GMAT as early as possible. The scores are valid for five years, and you can re-take the test if you wish.

The GMAT is required of all students applying to the MBA program at The University of Montana. Information can be obtained at http://www.mba.com under the heading "Take the GMAT."  This is a comprehensive and informative website for individuals considering an MBA program. Alternatively, a bulletin about the GMAT can be obtained from the Missoula campus by e-mail request to Cyndi Stary or from the Off-Campus MBA Office by e-mail request to Off-Campus MBA.

We look for minimum scores of:
●  Total GMAT score:  500
●  Verbal portion score: 25%
●  Quantitative portion score:  25%
●  Analytical Writing score: 3.5

Our experience shows that students who take time to prepare for the GMAT generally do well on the examination the first time.

GMAT PREPARATION TIPS

Bookstores on local campuses usually stock study guides and/or software for the GMAT. Additonally, books can generally be found at any major retail book chain, or online with retailers such as Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and half.com.

Students can also locate both free study materials and materials for purchase, including interactive tutorials, at http://www.mba.com by selecting the heading "Take the GMAT" then selecting the subheading "Tools to Help You Prepare."
